PDP

For my PDP I have talked about the people who I aspire to be because of their outstanding work.
For my career choice I'm am hoping that I one day will be a successful creative retoucher, I love the work  created by people such as Nick Humphires and Scott Freeman, and would love to work for companies such as Real-Fake, Taylor James and saddington baynes, they are all working at the high end of the creative world producing amazing iniative pieces of work.

One of my favourite pieces created by Real Fake is work they did for a cat litter company called Fresh Step, they made the advertisement show the cats holding themselves going to the toilet, they are obviously waiting for their owner to put out the 'Fresh Step'.

The last in a series of images we put together for FreshStep! Check it out in the latest issue of Real Simple magazine.

Another image we put together for Fresh Step!

I absolutely love these images, I think they work really well with the company, and made light of a product that isn't the nicest of things. These are just two of the images designed buy the company, there are a few more which are equally as good.
On their website which I really found interesting was them showing how they had created the images, this gave me an insight to how it's done and with practice I do believe that I too could be producing work like this.
http://www.real-fake.com/#/home/gallery/365 (Link to site)

When talking about what kind of portfolio I wish to create I decided that my own personal website would be most suited for me, I particularly like Nick Knights website, it is so minimal with next to no writing on it, just simply the bare minimum needed, but then he exhibits fantastic pieces of work.
http://www.nickknight.com/main.html (link to his site)

Now that I have more of an idea of which area of design I want to go in to I can start looking out for jobs, although I am not ready for one now as I still have a lot to learn I think that it is important for me to know what is out there, where the jobs are, what skills I need for them and when the time is right I will be confident in applying.
Sites I often use to look at jobs is creativepool (http://www.creativepool.co.uk/)
I think that this is a good site to use, and gives other useful infomation such as interview tips, help on creating your portfolio etc. There is also an option of putting yourself on there if you are looking for work so that clients can find you, I like to look at what other people are putting on their web folios so that I have more of an idea what I should do for mine and also so I can see what I am up against.
(http://www.creativepool.co.uk/freelancedirectory/resume.php?id=100443) an example of someone who has added their portfolio on the site.

Another site which I love is Society6, it is a site which thousands of designers add their work to, either just for other designers to see or for them to try and start selling work. I think this is a great way of getting confidence when starting out, other designers and comment and compliment you on your work.
It again is also a great way to see what other designers are creating.

I am also a member of 'Design Milk' on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/designmilk)
They add daily images, blogs, competitions, information etc all about design.
I think it's important to know what is going on in the world of design if that's the career you want to be in.
You need to be in the know.

Illustrator Practise

I've recently had Adobe Illustrator added to my laptop, it's software I've really wanted to be able to use for a long time and unfortunately the university only did one quick lesson with an introduction on how to use it - which for such a complex program was nowhere near long enough.
I took it upon myself to read lessons on the internet on how to use illustrator, here are a few examples of my practice work.

Exhibition Time...

At the end of the year we will have an end of year exhibition showcasing work the class has done this year, each person was to put forward one piece of work which would be shown in the exhibition.
For the work we were asked not to put forward a finished piece but to choose something that had not been finished or something that could be developed further, to help decide what work to pick we all had to bring in 4 pieces to present to the rest of the group that we would then get feed back from.
I presented my manifesto, my Hey Diddle Diddle images and my comic strip - the group said either the comic or the images, when speaking more with them I decided that I would develop the comic strip further, I could add colour and make it more interesting and eye catching, I would do this using either Photoshop or Illustrator.

First 7 Months...

I think my first 7 months at university have gone ok, I am happy with the work that I have produced however I know that I still have a lot to learn, but this all comes with time.
Things I want to work on:

  1. How to use the design software such as InDesign, Illustrator etc.
  2. Try and use new and different materials when drawing.
  3. Not leave things until the last minute - start as soon as I get the brief rather than leaving it and then having to rush as this reduces the standard of work I am submitting.
  4. Start to read books and magazines which are design related.
  5. Have earlier nights so that I am feeling fresh and inspired!

How to work with Creatives Marks

For my Add+ Vantage module I got only 56, which is my lowest mark yet however I wasn't expecting
it to be very good. I felt as a group we didn't spend the time we had wisely and everything was left
until the last minute which obviously reflects on our results.

Coursework (Cw) - 56

Module Mark (Mm) - 56
Grade (Gd) - PASS
Credits (Cr) - 20

147 DVA Design in Context Marks.

147 DVA Design in Context

Module Mark (Mm) - 64
Grade (Gd) - PASS
Credits (Cr) - 20

I am fairly pleased with this result, only 6 off a first which is what I would have like to have got
but that would mean producing a very high standard of professional work which I don't believe
that i am there yet, I am still learning and understanding how to use the different types of
software like InDesign, Illustrator, Quark Express etc, as these are all still very new to me
I am still very much in the learning process, hopefully in time once I am familiar with the
programs I will be able to produce a higher quality of work.

149DVA Typography Marks & Reflection

The typography project was split in the two parts, the first was to create a box and pick a story from that weeks news and show that story using the inside of the box. The box had to have at least one side open and couldn't have things outside of the box, we also had to create a 3D letter which would fit inside of the box - we had to choose the size, material and colour used carefully as we had to make it justifiable to why we had used it.
I decided to do something lighthearted and make it fun, I picked the story of Robbie Williams rejoining Take That after being split from them for 10 years and it also being the first time the 5 of them had preformed together in 10 years. I used the box to create a small studio with a stage - this was the X-Factor stage where they preformed together, I then made 5 mini card bored cutouts of the 5 members and had them standing on the stage, I had lights fitted to the box to make it bright and playful with shiny paper and glitter to make it big and bright like the X-Factor stage was. I had T as the letter and made it from cardboard which I then covered with mini money that I printed off, it was said that the 5 of them were each set to make over a million each in the first year of beinf reformed so I wanted to make a point of this.
I was quite please with the finished piece and thought I had stuck to the brief well, however I did think that I could have done better if I had put a bit more time in.

The second part was we were each given a different interpretation of the same story, they had all been written  in different styles, or by a different persons personal point from the story. My version was written as question and answer, what was most probably a person being questioned by some kind of authorial figure such as the police. The person was being asked what they had seen, how it made them feel, what they thought was happening etc, which the questions being answered. It was a formal piece of writing which has been written in fair detail.

For my research I looked at formal pieces such as police statements online – the layout of them and the fonts used to help me for my initial ideas. My original idea was to rewrite the text as a police statement, set out as questions followed by the answers, but after trying this out it looked boring, I wanted to make my piece more interesting. I went on to research other things related to investigating an incident. I started looking at lie detector graph results (polygraphs), and what they looked like. I decided for my final design I would set my work out like a polygraph, with the questions set out to form the table, and the answers creating the graph results. Although the questions and answers were in order to match one another, to help define which went with which I alternately changed to the font between regular, bold, italics and bold italics. This made the graph easier to understand. I think my work is successful as it is a clever way of showing the cross examination of a witness being questioned. The polygraph is an interesting way of showing the results going up and down as the witness is being interrogated by the police.

Here is an example of the style of how my work was set out because unfortunately I can't open the file on my laptop.

Coursework (Cw) - 58
Module Mark (Mm) - 58
Grade (Gd) - PASS
Credits (Cr) - 20

Although 58 is a fairly good mark I am a little disappointed as I was have liked to have got higher, however I suppose it is a fair grade to the work I submitted, because I didn't really enjoy the second part of the project I found It had to get in to, I also really struggled using InDesign as it is a software I am unfamiliar with. Instead of spending the time producing a high standard of work, I was spending my time trying to figure out how to use the program.

150DVA Visual Communication Mark & Reflection

Coursework (Cw) - 68
Module Mark (Mm) - 68
Grade (Gd) - PASS
Credits (Cr) - 20

From the Visual Communications Module which is the module which I did the first 5 weeks from when

I started university I got 68 which I was really pleased with, its only 2 marks off a first which for my
first piece of work I thought was really good. I was really unsettled when I first started trying to remember
my way around, get to know people on the course, try to remember my log in and passwords for
everything etc, so I wasn't entirely focused on the word because I had so much else going on at the time,
so I was please with this mark, although I wish I had added a little something extra which would have
gained me those extra two marks!

Illustration Mark & Reflection

I got 60 for my Illustration module, I am quite pleased with this as I don't think my drawing is as strong as the others in the group so I wasn't expecting a very high mark, I think that I may have made my mark higher by having good ideas that fit to the brief each week.
I hope that my illustration work continues to improve as obviously it is an important part of design, I will do this by lots of practice and trying different styles of drawing until I find my own style which I am most comfortable and confident with!

Harvard Referencing...

I had my first experience of Harvard referencing when doing the second part of module 147 DVA - The essay. It was something i'd never had to do before, and stupidly I didn't pay attention when it was being explained to us, so when it came to doing it I didn't have a clue where to start. I had to search on google and try and figure it out for myself, I'm still not sure now even after I've handed it in if I did it right or not - but at least I had a go.
I think for the next time we are asked to do an essay I will asked for it to be explained to me again to make sure I do it right. (Serves me right for day dreaming!!)

A101DVA - They Won't Bite ... How to work with Creatives

For my Add+ Vantage module I decided to pick 'How to work with creatives', this was where I would learn how to work with and present myself to creatives in the real world. I would gain knowledge in this subject then at the end of the module have to do a presentation in a small group showing what I had learned.
I picked this subject because I find it hard to speak in front of  groups of people both socially and professionally, I get really nervous and would do my best to put off having to do it if I could, obviously this isn't idea with the line of work i'm hoping to go in to, in the future I am going to have to present my work and ideas to people in hope to find jobs etc, so this is something I really need to try and getting better at and overcome the nerves.
In each lesson we were taught different skills and techniques to help us understand what we should and shouldn't do when presenting ourselves, and what we should try and do to overcome worrying about doing presentations etc.
Half way through the module we were put in to groups and asked to come up with a new product which we would then have to try and sell to the rest of the group. The product could be anything, we had to give it a name, slogan and present it on a Power Point presentation. The presentation had to be at least 10 minutes long, and each person in the group had to speak, I was really nervous about speaking in front of the class, and was even worried about practicing in front of my group!
I personally thought that my group didn't make enough effort in this project, nobody was interested in meeting and it was all left to the last day or two for us to try and get something together, although I thought our product idea was fun and original we didn't give ourself time to present our idea well, it was rushed and we didn't have enough time to practice. I personally would have liked to have much more of an effort because this was something I really wanted to learn from as I know it's something i'm going to have to start doing more and more and I'm dreading it!

Overall I am glad I pick this Add+ Vantage module as I found the classes quite useful, however I wish that more effort in the group work had been put in.

147 DVA Design in Context

This modules coursework came in 2 parts, brief Part 1: Practical coursework.
We were asked to design the cover (front, back and spine) for a new Penguin edition of James M. Cain’s 1934 novel The Postman Always Rings Twice.

We were also split in to groups of different countries which we would have to design the book for, I was in North Africa.
Before I could even start to think of ideas for the book I needed to do thorough research in to North Africa - the culture, the people, the religions there etc, these factors would all play a huge part in how the cover would look.
I found it really hard to get in to starting the cover, I had a few ideas but nothing I particularly liked. It was a long process getting all my research together and coming up with different designs, and also coming up with designs which I could justify being appropriate for the North African market.

First Cover. Bleeding Rose In Hands.
Cover 2 - Womans Lips With Lipstick.
Final design - Cats Eyes.

Brief Part 2: Referenced contextual studies essay

“Imagine that you have before you a flagon of wine. You have two goblets before you. One is of solid gold, wrought in the most exquisite patterns. The other is of crystal-clear glass, thin as a bubble, and as transparent. Pour and drink; and according to your choice of goblet, I shall know whether or not you are a connoisseur of wine. For if you have no feelings about wine one way or the other, you will want the sensation of drinking the stuff out of a vessel that may have cost thousands of pounds; but if you are a member of that vanishing tribe, the amateurs of fine vintages, you will choose the crystal, because everything about it is calculated to reveal rather than to hide the beautiful thing which it was meant to contain. There is nothing simple or dull in achieving the transparent page. Vulgar ostentation is twice as easy as discipline.” From The Crystal Goblet, or, Printing Should Be Invisible, by Beatrice Warde (1900-69), 1955.

This is the piece of text we were given and asked What did we think Warde was trying to say, and told that it must be explained it in terms of design and illustration practice and also how relevant are her words in relation to my cover design to The Postman Always Rings Twice; The Doves Press Holy Bible of 1903-5; and The National Express website homepage of 2010.
I found it really hard to get my head around what I was being asked to do, I've found that I seem to make things harder for myself - instead of getting on with things straight away I tell myself that I can't do it and get myself all worried and put off doing it.
I didn't start my essay until 3 days before it was due to be handed in - nothing like leaving it until the last minute! Although i felt really stressed over the three days in a mad rush to get the essay together and set it out like a magazine article I feel that's what I needed to get me in the mind set to do it, I didn't have the time to tell myself I couldn't do it - I just had to get on with it, and I was actually really please with my final piece. Although obviously if I had given myself the weeks I had to do it properly I could have maybe produced something better, I was happy that I got something together to hand in - because at the beginning I didn't think I could have done anything!

Developing Illustration Concepts...

I handed my first illustration module in on Friday, I was in a mad rush to get everything finished and ready in time to hand in, I wasn't happy with previous things I had done in the lesson so spent a lot of time going back through and redoing things, although this took a lot of time I'm glad I did because I think it will have made my work look stronger.
I find illustration a lot harder then I do Graphic Design but hope that my work can only improve with the more practice I have and the more knowledge I gain.
I felt so relieved getting it all done, finished and handed in - just need to concentrate on my Graphics work now to make sure thats ready for the deadline!!

Illustration Deadline Coming Very Close....

The deadline for Developing Illustration Concepts is on the 10th of March which is only a week away. I’ve still got loads of work to do and will have to put a lot of time and effort in over the next few days to ensure I get it done on time.I still have over half of my 100 drawing left to do, along with other bits and pieces which need finishing off.I find illustration quite difficult and feel that my drawings are weak compared to others in my group. I have the ideas of what I want to do, but struggle to get them down on paper.I have to draw my idea rough first then do it over and over until I get it right.Illustration is definitely my weakness from the course, sometimes I think that maybe I should just be in the Graphic Design course, however I think that the lessons have helped me, and that my drawings are slowly improving.Hopefully I will soon find my own 'style' and be more comfortable and confident.

Developing Illustration Concepts

On a Thursday I have my illustration lesson, we get taught new ways to draw and build on our existing knowledge.
Lesson 1.
Inaction Man
We were given a template of a man standing with a list of emotions which we had to make the man show, for example if he was happy we would do him jumping, or cheering. This was to make us understand how emotion of a person or character is shown is very powerful in illustration, it can make the audience connect with the emotion immediately.

Lesson 2.
Brainstorming Session (Superhero)
This lesson got us working in groups, brainstorming ideas to help us create a new superhero. The brainstorming was to help us generate new ideas, and expand our initial thoughts.

These are my first rough drawings, as you can see I have tired different things and positioning of the girl, I used these ideas to design my final superhero, Ipod girl.

Flying Ipod Girl.
Standing Ipod Girl.

Lesson 3.
Political and Satirical Cartoon.
We were asked to research political and satirical newspaper comic illustrations, then pick a newspaper story from that week and come up with our own illustration for it.
I picked the article about there being talks of whether prisoners should have the right to vote or not.

Week 4
Photo Montage- When the Oil Runs Out.
We were asked to create a photo montage of what we think the world will be like once oil runs out. We could use text and images we found from various magazines and newspapers.

We then had to create a simplified version which shows the same message but using as little imagery/text possible.
Simplified version.
My message is that without oil the world will be turned upside down.
Week 5
Movie Poster Project.

Our lecturer Francis taught us a way to generate ideas for the purposes of narrative, without the use of clichés.The movies we had to design a poster for were  called Cirque Dent Soleil, which involved an old man going to the dentist at the circus, and The Last Christmas a story which was about terrorists attacking Christmas. For Cirque Dent Soleil we ruled out all clichés such as an old man, a circus tent etc, and for the last Christmas Ruled things to do with Christmas such as trees, lights, snow, father Christmas etc, and bombs, guns, fighting and anything else we associated with terroristCirque Dent Soleil
Image 1.
Image 2.
The Last Christmas

I found creating these posters hard as you had to avoid using the things you would usually think of doing first, but it was very useful as it helped me come up with new ways to create original ideas, instead of just recreating things which other people will have already have done previously.
Week 6
Perspective and Foreshortening.

Week 7
Editorial/ Magazine Illustration
This week we were asked to look through magazines and newspapers to find an article which we could then design a an illustration which could go along side it.
I found an article in the News Of The World, which suggested that we should now be eating a minimum of 8 fruit and veg a day if we want to stay healthy.
It came from a recent study done at a University, but the editor suggested that 8 (3 more up from the already suggested amount) is unrealistic and would be hard for people to keep up with.
I used this when designing my ideas.

A woman trying to juggle all the fruit and veg she is expected to be eating!
Another woman struggling to carry all her shopping filled with fruit and veg.

Week 8.
Advertising Campaign
We were given a list of really dull items which we had to try and make attractive to the buyer, to do this we had to come up with a product name, slogan, poster and packaging.
I first chose to do a packet of nails, I called the product 'Fancy Fingers', and the slogan was 'The only thing you need to wear to get noticed''.

Poster design
Front packaging design

After completing my first product, I decided to have a go at designing the advertisement for another one of the products - a bottle of water.

I named the water Funky Fresh.
Here is the bottle design along with the slogan.
First poster design.
Second poster design.

Third poster design.
I wanted to try and make my designs quite quirky which I think I have achieved. I named the water 'Funky Fresh' to try to appeal to the younger generation, and tried to make the designs colourful and eye catching, rather than them being plain and maybe a little boring like water products usually are.
Overall I am pleased with both outcomes of the advertisement campaign and hopefully this first attempt at doing something like this will help me if i'm asked to do something like this again in the future.

Week 9
Comic Strip
We spent the lesson looking at different  styles of comic strips and were then asked to think of a personal experience that we could turn in to our own comic strip using only 3 panels.
To make our stories more interesting we were allowed to exaggerate them or add little things on here and there, I decided that my comic strip was going to be of when I went to a zoo in Australia and was feeding the kangaroo's, I was feeding all the smaller one's fine until one really big one came over and snatched the whole bag of food out of my hand!
I thought to add a bit of a funny twist I would make it so the kangaroo dropped the bag of food and ate me instead,
I struggled to get ideas for how to lay my comic out and thought it was hard to fit a story in to only three panels, I kept putting it off and finding other work to get on with until the deadline was almost due, after worrying about doing so much I am actually quite please with how it turned out, they are simple images but I think that it tells the story well.
Week 10
Life Drawing
This week as a class we did life drawing, it was something I had never done before so I was looking forward to having the opportunity to do so, however I thought that I was really going to struggle.
The man that we were drawing was asked to pose in a number of different positions for us and we were given different amounts of time to draw him for each position.
The first few drawings I did I really struggled with, I couldn't get the perspective of the body right and he looked out of proportion, but towards the end I felt that I was improving.

  Drawing 1 - Front on.
Drawing 2 - Sitting behind
Drawing 3 - Side shadow lines only.
Drawing 4 - Behind.

I hope that with more practice my life drawing will improve.

Week 11.
Artist collective
An artist collective is an initiative that is the result of a group of artists working together, usually under their own management, towards shared aims. The aims of an artist collective can include almost anything that is relevant to the needs of the artist, this can range from purchasing bulk materials, sharing equipment, space or materials, through to following sharedideologies, aesthetic and political views or even living and working together as an extended family. Sharing of ownership, risk, benefits, and status is implied, as opposed to other, more common business structures with an explicit hierarchy of ownership such as an association or a company.
For illustration, we were put in groups to make an artist collective, and design a 12 page book, including 2 of our on illustrations. Our group decided to create a book around the nursery rhyme 'Hey Diddle Diddle'.
Drawing 1 -  Dish ran away with the spoon.
Drawing 2 - Cat playing the fiddle.

This is the front cover of our book. We each drew part of a cat and combined them together.

We designed the book in such a way that we had to cut our illustrations into thirds. Like a puzzle, once you piece the books together, you would get the whole image. We felt it made our books more of a limited edition.

Images of our book.

Week 12.
100 Drawings
We were all asked to bring in an object of our choice, it had to be something we liked or found interesting as we would be drawing the same object 100 times! We had to draw it in as many different materials, angles, perspectives etc as we could think of. It was to help us think of new and different ways of drawing things rather than just sticking to the obvious of what were used to.
I decided that I was going to draw a peacock feather that I had at home, I really love animal prints and patterns so thought that I would enjoy drawing the feather. I found the first 20 or so pretty easy, but it got much harder as I went on, especially the last 30ish! Here are a few examples of what I did....

I got 60 for my Illustration module, I am quite pleased with this as I don't think my drawing is as strong as the others in the group so I wasn't expecting a very high mark, I think that I may have made my mark higher by having good ideas that fit to the brief each week.
